US Grappling Submission-Only IX Results

Saturday, March 6th, 2010 @ 5:05 pm

Fifty/50 sent out a small group of competitors to US Grappling’s Submission Only IX tournament in Ashland, Virginia on March 6, 2010. As usual, multiple medals were brought back to the gym.

Will Mulhern fought to advance his position throughout his No Gi Intermediate division to take home a gold medal, finishing the finals with a choke from the back. Will showed excellent fundamentals throughout the course of his matches, repeatedly scoring with takedowns and guard passes, as well as controlling his opponents with pressure from the top. In his white belt division, Will advanced to the semi finals and controlled his 40 minute match, taking down his opponent, passing the guard and repeatedly mounting before a simple mistake found him in a wrist lock. Big Willy Style showed lots of promise and is sure to come back in the next tournament with an even tighter game.

Son Duong and Kenny Savercool were both moved up to the Advanced Featherweight No Gi division, despite both weighing in as Flyweights. Son started the match defending in the guard of his opponent before locking a D’Arce choke from the bottom which he quickly finished after reversing to the top, cinching it tightly and putting his larger opponent to sleep. On the other side of the bracket, after a lengthy foot lock battle in which he popped his opponent’s foot with a 50/50 heel hook, Savercool ended his match with a tight armlock. With no one left to fight, Son and Kenny closed out the division for Fifty/50.

In the gi, Son and Kenny were once again moved up a weight class when the blue belt flyweight division did not have enough competitors. After repeatedly sweeping and passing the guard of his much larger opponent, Kenny mounted and looked for the x-choke before transitioning into a triangle that finished the match. On the other end of the bracket, Son had a back and forth battle with tough blue belt, Patrick Trinidad of Linxx Academy. Despite a near finish via choke, Son eventually succumbed to an armlock from his opponent and had to settle for bronze. In the final, Savercool avenged his teammate’s defeat by quickly sweeping Trinidad, passing his guard twice, taking his back and finishing with a rear choke. With that win, Kenny added to his 2010 streak, taking the double gold (blue belt gi and no-gi Advanced) for the fourth consecutive time this year.

Congratulations to our competition team, which is looking sharp heading into the final weeks of training before the Pan American Jiu Jitsu Championships in Irvine, CA. There’s a lot of work to do, but things are moving in the right direction. Stay tuned for more competition results soon!
