Fifty/50 Dominates at Ground Zero Submission-Only in West Virginia

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010 @ 5:57 pm

Seph Smith wins gi and no-gi absolute divisions, Tim Koren and Rich Fitzgerald pick up valuable experience before the Mundial.

Brown belt Seph Smith earned himself a $500 cash prize by way of dual gold medals in the gi and no-gi absolute divisions (in addition to a gold in his no-gi advanced weight division) while Rich Fitzgerald demonstrated improvement in his passing game.

Utilizing the competition to work on developing new techniques, Rich Fitzgerald competed only in the gi where he won the blue belt lightweight division, submitting his first opponent with a mounted armlock and guillotining his second to take the gold.

Tim Koren had a tough 15+ minute gi match that didn’t go his way, but he rebounded to win his no-gi advanced division with a submission in the final and close out the no-gi absolute with Seph, defeating Balance Pittsburgh instructor, Jimmy Cerra, with an arm triangle choke in the semi-final after passing the guard and securing the back.

A solid performance overall (7-1) from the small Fifty/50 contingent in preparation for the bigger tournaments looming on the horizon. Stay tuned for news from the CBJJ Mundial in 2 weeks!
