Fifty/50 Makes Impressive Showing at Diamond State Games

Saturday, June 19th, 2010 @ 11:07 pm

Rick Slomba wins all of his matches and takes the Advanced Absolute title, leading a mixed group of new and veteran competitors that took the title for points from a single academy.

July 19, 2010
Bear, Delaware

Turning up the intensity on training in the Basics classes yielded immediate results as the team took 4 of a possible 8 Men’s Advanced titles in addition to numerous gold medals in the blue and purple belt brackets. Rick Slomba submitted brown belt Monroe Hall (Maryland BJJ) in the final of the Advanced Absolute (open weight) class with a 50/50 heel hook to take the gold medal. Tim Koren also made his usual strong showing, winning all of his matches with the exception of a single loss via advantage.

In spite of weighing in well beneath the ceiling for his weight class, Son Duong positionally dominated his higher ranked opponent, Joshua Peters (Capital Punishment), to win the final of the lightest weight Advanced division. Blue belt Rich Fitzgerald had an up and down day, but it was highlighted by a gutsy victory over brown belt Jimmy Morrison (Balance Studios) in his Advanced division to close things out with Tim. In a semi-surprising display, blue belt Eric Force submitted his opponent in the final of his Men’s Advanced division with a toe hold…which we didn’t really know he knew how to use. haha.

The final standout of the day was Megan Lomonoff, who finished her opponent in the final of the Women’s white belt Absolute class with an oma plata shoulder lock. Unfortunately, Megan’s opponent was injured by the submission, and we wish her a speedy recovery.
