Putting in some work before the end of the year, Megan Lomonof, Jen Flannery, Ryan Hall, and Darson Hemmings represented Fifty/50 at the local installment of one of the two major regional grappling circuits in the USA.

No-Gi:

Megan Lomonof started out the day for Fifty/50, winning her Advanced no-gi weight class with a quick submission and a shutout points victory. Stepping up for a match in the open class against a girl outweighing her by 70 lbs, Megan showed excellent composure and technique in nearly finishing her opponent with an armlock and then an oma plata before succumbing to inexperience and being caught in a counter armlock.

Jen Flannery continued the strong showing for the ladies with a snap down directly into a tight guillotine choke that finished her lone opponent in the Women’s Advanced light featherweight division.

Ryan Hall finished off all three of his Expert welter-weight division opponents in under 2 minutes each. He caught his first round opponent with an inverted guard triangle, finished his second with pressure from the back mount after a takedown and guard pass, then submitted black belt Chris Mahan (Gustavo Machado) with a mounted keylock to take first place.

Visiting from Toronto, Canada, purple belt Darson Hemmings used his guard to frustrate and score on his first round opponent before slipping onto the back for a rear naked choke finish. In the final, he faced black belt Carlos David Oliveira. The fight was back-and-forth with good attacks from both competitors, but in the end, Carlos David’s experience showed through and carried him to a narrow points victory.

Gi:

Megan Lomonof again showed improvement by quickly submitting her lone opponent.

Jen Flannery swept, passed, mounted, and cross choked her only opponent to take a shorthanded gold.

Weighing over 30 lbs less than his opposition, Ryan Hall entered the black belt absolute division. In his first match, he foot swept, passed, and took the back of his opponent before locking in the winning bow-and-arrow choke in less than a minute. In the final, Ryan faced Saulo Ribeiro black belt Ben Eaton. After pulling guard, Ryan quickly locked his opponent in a triangle choke from inverted position. From there, he elected to switch to an oma plata in search of the finish. When his opponent gave position to avoid the finish, Ryan swept, passed guard to knee-on-stomach, and finally took the back. The short (6 minute) match would end there with Ryan comfortably ahead on points for the gold.

Fifty/50′s competition team is training hard and getting ready to hit the tournament circuit at full steam starting in January 2012. Grapplers Quest in Asbury Park, NJ is next weekend.
