Week of Promotions at Fifty/50

Friday, May 4th, 2012 @ 2:19 am

Three new brown belts, a purple, and four blues highlight a series of well-deserved bumps up in rank for beginner and OG Fifty/50 members.

With news of promotions (which don’t come along frequently) getting out early, both Tuesday and Thursday were packed with students ready to congratulate their teammates…and make their lives awful for as long as possible as they earned their new ranks by fighting a gauntlet of Fifty/50 members ranking from white to black belts for two minutes apiece without faltering. With over forty opponents on Tuesday and just under fifty on Thursday, each promotee had to dig deep to earn their color.

Each person up for promotion has proven him or herself both in the gym and in competition, where it matters most. We look forward to seeing each student fighting at their new rank and working hard to earn the same respect at their new level that they earned at their previous one.

Extra respect goes out to Jen Flannery (weighing in at a whopping 112 lbs soaking wet) who was injured early on in her test, but opted to continue wrestling with one arm (over 20 additional opponents) in spite of the pain because she could not fathom quitting mid-test. Jen bravely demonstrated the core values of our academy, an example of heart and determination that we can all learn from. Next week’s lesson: sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.
