Seph Smith Promoted to Black Belt

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012 @ 9:26 pm

On one of the proudest nights in the 3-year history of Fifty/50 Jiu-Jitsu, Ryan Hall, with the blessing of Marcelo Garcia, promoted his longtime friend, student, and training partner to the rank of black belt. Read on for details.

Brothers

Surrounded by friends and students of all levels, Seph Smith was awarded his final rank in Jiu-Jitsu, the culmination of over a decade of dedicated training and competition in one of the few remaining performance-based martial arts. Long regarded as the most difficult art to achieve a black belt in by far, Jiu-Jitsu is one of the few remaining bastions of ranking integrity (for the most part) in the martial arts and earning one from a legitimate instructor is an incredible achievement that only those who have gone through it can truly appreciate.

At Fifty/50, we believe that rank can only be awarded through hard work, dedication, time, and trial. It is something that is earned, never given. In addition to being a highly-decorated competitor in Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling, and amateur mixed martial arts, Seph has distinguished himself as an instructor and a coach, guiding the students of Fifty/50 to scores of competitive victories. More important than technical mastery, though, Seph embodies the values of integrity, honor, toughness, heart, determination, and dedication that Ryan founded this academy upon. As he explained to all those that were present for the promotion, having the opportunity to pass his brother, friend, training partner, student, and coach to this final rank is one of the proudest days in his life.

As he goes forward in competition, coaching, and anywhere else life leads him, Seph will always be a representative of Fifty/50 Jiu-Jitsu. We are proud and honored to have him.
