US Grappling Richmond Results

Saturday, August 4th, 2012 @ 8:35 pm

An excellent team-wide performance leads to the Team Title for a single academy and lots of gold medals all around. Read on for more info and individual results.

Kenny Savercool, German Salas and Will Mulhern led a group of new and veteran competitors who put on a great performance in the aggressive and attacking style that Fifty/50 Jiu-Jitsu is known for.

With excellent fighting spirit, no stalling, solid conditioning, and close attention to coaching all around from the newcomers to the local tournament scene, there was a lot to be happy with. Ricardo Carvalho and Ken Ohnishi picked up Absolute (open weight) titles in the Men’s beginner no-gi and white belt divisions respectively. Ken impressed a number of spectators with his repeated loop choke finishes and handling of giant (250 lbs+) opponents despite tipping the scales at only 135 lbs. Ken Stiver also had a great performance in the white belt gi division, finishing 2nd in the Absolute Class to his teammate after winning the middleweight division.

Will Mulhern and German Salas took home no-gi Advanced titles, as well as weight class golds in their blue and purple belt gi divisions. German and Kenny Savercool fought particularly well in the gi, winning their purple belt divisions and defeating Parker Conner (Revolution BJJ) via points and bow and arrow choke respectively.

Leah Buckley put on a strong performance as the team’s lone female representative, medaling in all of her brackets, including the absolute classes. The women’s team looks to get a boost in the coming months with the return of Jen Flannery from injury, as well as Megan Lomonof and Val Worthington from competitive layoffs following the Mundial.
