Training In NorCal For The ADCC Trials…

Thursday, May 21st, 2009 @ 1:43 am

I want to extend a huge “thank you” to Paul Schreiner and Garth Taylor for having me out to Santa Cruz to train for the week prior to the ADCC Trials. The opportunity to work with and learn from them again was an awesome experience that I feel made a really positive impact on my result at the Trials.

Kaijin has tough training and a great atmosphere that’s both geared towards improving the students and welcoming to visiting competitors. Paul and Garth have an unbelievable amount of experience competing against and training with some of the best Jiu-Jitsu players in the world and it shows in the instruction and training methods at their gym.

Paul and I bounced around for a few days prior to the tournament, getting some work in with Dave Camarillo, Jon Fitch, and Josh Koscheck at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, then stopping at the Gracie Academy in Torrance for the final day and a half before the Trials to lose some weight and pick up some tips from Ryron Gracie. Dave and Ryron were particularly gracious and took a lot of time to help me out and sharpen up some problem areas in my game. Overall, I had a great time and I can’t wait to get back out to Santa Cruz to do it again before the ADCC main event in September.

Note on training at the Gracie Academy:

To say that Ryron Gracie is ridiculously good as both a fighter and instructor is an understatement. I learned a ton from getting to train with him and his students, and Ryron took the time to answer every question Paul and I had. Ryron is an awesome teacher with a really legitimate enthusiasm for sharing his considerable knowledge. It was an absolute privilege to have the opportunity to learn from him and I’m really looking forward to going back to train there again soon. Anybody coming through the Los Angeles area should definitely take the time to stop in and learn from the family who started this whole thing. Shockingly, they’re really good at this Jiu-Jitsu stuff. haha.
