The Fifty/50 crew put on an impressive performance at the Copa Nova in Ashburn, VA, dominating the competition. Newcomers made some impressive debuts, regulars continued to clean up their games in preparation for the upcoming ADCC Regionals and IBJJF No-Gi Pan Am’s, and two teen phenoms made a dent in the adult divisions. Information below…
NO-GI:
Advanced:
Anthony Cincotta continued both his gold medal and submission streaks at the Advanced level, finishing both of his opponents with 50/50 heel hooks to take the Welter-Weight title. First up was Lloyd Irvin purple belt, Lenny Maggio, who has turned in a series of impressive performances at both local and international tournaments over the past 10 months. Anthony showed his wrestling in taking down his experienced opponent before tangling the legs and finishing with the heel hook. In the final, faced off with another Lloyd Irvin student, Arthur Walcott. After a back-and-forth battle on the feet with strong takedown attempts going both ways, Anthony pulled half guard, floated his opponent, tangled the legs, and finished the heel hook…in spite of some repeated kicks to the face by Arthur as he defended the position.
Winning nearly everything he has entered and submitting an impressive list of opponents over the past 7 months, Anthony is quickly becoming one of the top amateur competitors on the East Coast. October’s IBJJF No-Gi Pan Am’s in New York City will be Anthony’s first opportunity to make a his mark on the International level before the major tournaments roll back around next year.
Christopher and Christian Broadnax, on loan from Robert Drysdale’s academy in Las Vegas, cleaned up the Teens Advanced Middleweight division. The kids dominated their matches in the preliminary rounds before having a friendly match in the final and splitting the gold medal.
Intermediate:
Dave England showed excellent positioning and top control in the Light Heavyweight division, earning his first gold medal at the Intermediate level. Excellent work, Dave!
Beginner:
Making his competitive debut, Joel Borovski demonstrated a competitive maturity well beyond the norm for someone who has only trained for 6 months. Joel was truly dominant in taking both the Superheavy and Absolute (open weight) classes without surrendering a single point. It’ll be very interesting to see how Joel progresses over the coming months…
Navid Khodadoost looked dangerous…if a bit wild…in taking 2nd place in the Super Lightweight division. Naveed’s guard was a hazard to anyone who got near it, as he managed to catch everyone he fought in a triangle. Excellent work for his first time out.
GI:
Blue Belt:
In his first tournament at the blue belt level, Dave England defeated his first opponent on points and submitted his second with an armlock after passing the guard. Excellent performance by Dave, who has improved immensely since his last competition.
Part-time Fifty/50 student, Kenny Savercool, took 3rd in the Lightweight division, winning his first match by a landslide of points and losing in the semi-final via a last-second sweep.
Christopher Broadnax defeated his only opponent, Damien Sautter (Lloyd Irvin), in the Teens Advanced Gi division. Chris demonstrated impressive control from his guard before finishing with an armlock to take the title.
Christian Broadnax, 15, put some grown men on suicide watch as he dominated in the Adult Lightweight division in entertaining fashion. Christian submitted all three of his opponents in rapid and dominating fashion (including a mounted x-choke in the final), but not before showing some acrobatic Judo and a nasty tai otoshi along the way.
White Belt:
Joel Borovski apparently decided at some point in the early afternoon that two gold medals just wouldn’t do, so he put in a repeat performance in the gi Superheavyweight division to earn his third yellow medal of the day. Again, without surrendering a point. He thinks he’s sooooo sweet with his “winning.” Jerk…
Navid Khodadoost picked up another silver medal in the Super Lightweight division, finishing his first opponent with the triangle choke before losing a truly razor-thin points decision to the same opponent he faced in the final of the no-gi. Navid looked even better in the gi than he did without it, though, showing an impressive ability to make adjustments on the fly as he listened to his coaches. Excellent work and a good platform to build on for the future.
Overall, the team exceeded expectations and looked as good as ever (and a little help from Chris and Christian didn’t hurt, either). 7 competitors, 9 gold medals, over 20 victories, and most importantly, quickly improving and highly adaptable technique. Great work, guys! Competition Team try-outs are this coming Friday. If you were tricked into signing up…prepare to hate life. Mua hahahahahahaha.
