Joseph “Seph” Smith
Seph Smith has been training in the martial arts since February 2001 and he holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a 2nd degree black belt in Combat Sombo. Aside from his considerable tournament experience in Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling, Seph has competed successfully in several other forms of grappling (Judo, Sombo, folkstyle wrestling) over the years, as well as amateur mixed martial arts where he held a regional title belt for the WKA organization.
More than just a competitor, Seph brings with him to Fifty/50 extensive experience and knowledge of both coaching and personal training. As an official referee for several high-profile grappling organizations across the country (Grapplers Quest, NAGA, US Grappling, etc.), Seph sees thousands of competitive matches each year and uses this unique perspective to give his students uncommon insight into what it takes to be a successful competitor. The former head grappling coach at Team Lloyd Irvin/NoVA MMA, Seph helped student after student reach their goals both in the competitive arena and in personal fitness. At Fifty/50, he continues to work with students of all levels while furthering his own training and competitive goals. Seph specializes in creating a training environment based on positive reinforcement and hard work that will push any level of student to their limits while building their confidence in themselves and their skills. He is a passionate instructor who prides himself on being able to help his students reach their fitness and martial arts goals, whatever they may be.
Seph’s Competitive Accomplishments Include:
- Active Competitor in BJJ and Judo since 2001 and MMA since 2002
- Multiple time NAGA, Grapplers Quest, and U.S. Grappling Champion
- Won and Held the WKA East Coast Regional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Title Belt
- The Good Fight: “Dogfight In Dover” Professional Lightweight Champion
- Multiple time Beltsville Judo Champion
- Privately trained several members of the law enforcement and military communities, as well as secret service and FBI personnel
