GoGirlGo! Summer Camp

GoGirlGo! Self-Defense Camp

GoGirlGo! Self-Defense Camp

GoGirlGo! is a program sponsored by the Women’s Sports Foundation, a non-profit educational organization that seeks to advance the lives of girls and women through sports and physical activity.

GoGirlGo! combines sports participation with an educational intervention that focuses on reducing and preventing the potential hazards of dealing with adolescent issues in unhealthy ways. The sports environment provides girls with experiences of teamwork, goal-setting, positive adult mentoring and leadership training, as well as a ready-made social support system.

The Self-Defense Camp in Arlington, Virginia is specifically designed for girls age 8-13 to learn how to protect themselves physically and mentally against situations they may encounter in middle school/high school and beyond. Girls will be introduced to physical situations where they may be smaller and weaker than an attacker and taught techniques they may use to defend themselves. Girls will also be introduced to mental and emotional situations faced by elite female athletes and encouraged to discover their own inner-strength and learn how to confront and overcome similar situations in their own lives. Guest speakers may include female military personnel, elite female athletes, female medical practitioners etc.

GoGirlGo! Scrapbook Time

Each camp attendee will be provided with a GoGirlGo! “Guide to Life” which depicts each of the athlete stories they will read about, a GoGirlGo! “Scrapbook” with introspective activities, and a packet of the techniques they’ve learned to deal with physical confrontations. GoGirlGo! also provide’s a “Parent’s Guide” for how to encourage an active healthy lifestyle for your daughter.

The program director for this camp is Ms. Jeanette Flannery, a multiple-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu International medalist and creator of the first women-only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program in the state of Virginia. Ms. Flannery has a B.A. degree in International Relations from the University of Maryland. In addition, she was the 2010 JV Field Hockey coach at Yorktown High School and was a professional swim coach at Curl-Burke Swim Club (2003-2006).
