The first Fifty/50 affiliate, Upstream BJJ, is owned and operated by Ryan Hall's first Black Belt, Seph Smith. Seph taught at the 50/50 headquarters in Northern Virginia from the time it was founded in December 2008 until 2015 when he returned to Richmond to realize his dream of opening an academy in his hometown. Upstream is located in the heart of Richmond and promotes an open, friendly environment with the tough training that defines the Fifty/50 method. Frank Rosenthal, an accomplished competitor and John Danaher Black Belt, began training under Ryan Hall in 2021 and opened the Phantom Jiu-Jitsu academy in 2023.
